Modern gambling, which still exists today, became popular during the 18th and 19th centuries in the United Kingdom

The Greeks already bet on sports betting Ghana competitions and the Romans followed in their footsteps by creating important circuses in which gladiators and animals faced each other. However, modern gambling, which still exists today, became popular during the 18th and 19th centuries in the United Kingdom. In the beginning, practically only bets were placed on horse and greyhound racing, however, as a result of the birth of the first bookmakers, this practice was also extended to other sports.

Today, the possibilities are even greater, and betting on political elections, television quizzes, or video game competitions is already common. This sector has grown a lot in recent years and has been strongly supported by online bookmakers. Brands such as Sportier, William Hill, or Bet356 have opened a niche in the Spanish market and have become part of the current list of the best legal bookmakers in the country.

The origins of betting in Ghana – The Lottery and the Quiniela

Ghana is a country with a great sports betting tradition and a strong love of betting and games of chance. In fact, for more than 200 years, Spaniards have enjoyed the lottery, a service managed by the State. Even so, today, the lottery is still a very popular game in the country, especially the Extraordinary Christmas Raffle and the Extraordinary Children’s Raffle, which each year distribute millions of euros in prizes. Likewise, the lottery in Ghana is also associated with charitable causes and this is due to the work of the National Organization of the Spanish Blind (ONCE), which since 1938 has raised funds to help blind people or people with vision problems.

On the other hand, within the games of chance with a great tradition in the country, there is also the Quiniela, whose origins date back to the 1940s. Like the lottery, this service is also regulated by the state.

Gambling in Ghana – Bookmakers and casinos

Games of chance based on skills and abilities, such as poker or blackjack, were legalized in Ghana in 1977. However, it was not until four years later that the same was done with slot machines and other similar games. . From this moment on, casinos and gaming halls managed by private companies began to proliferate. However, lottery draws and pools continued to be in the hands of the State.

At that time, there was still no need to worry about gambling on the Internet, as this problem would come later.

Online bookmakers – Current situation

The next legislative change that would affect bookmakers and casinos would be Law 13/2011, of May 27, on gambling regulation. With it, Internet gambling is contemplated for the first time. Until then, the different international online casinos could offer their services in Ghana without any type of restriction. However, after the approval of this law, the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) was created and the first exclusive gambling licenses to operate in Ghana were granted. The main objectives of this regulation are to collect taxes and offer a greater guarantee of security for users.

Therefore, since 2011, all online casinos and bookmakers intending to operate in Ghana need a license or permit to do so. However, this has not been an impediment for many brands, since there are currently more than 50 platforms regulated by the DGOJ. Most of them offer the possibility of betting on the main sports competitions and on multiple casino games.
